Many campgrounds allow you to book up to a year in advance; and with a limited number of campgrounds, you may need to reserve a campsite even further in advance. Campers looking to stay in or near Charleston, SC have several options, a privately-operated campground or camping at one of South Carolina’s popular State Parks or a U.S. Forest Service campground. Each has its own appeal, depending upon your vacation expectations. While there are many campgrounds within an hour of the city, the following are the top eight campgrounds in the Charleston area.
Campground at James Island County Park
The beautifully landscaped 643-acre public campground, featuring 100 campsites, offers amenities typically found only at the finest private campground resorts. Located just 6 miles southwest of Charleston, it can be enjoyed throughout the region's mild winters. The campsites are generously sized and surrounded by lush foliage, providing privacy and separation from neighboring campers, even in the smaller sites. Plus, all campsites come with reliable Wi-Fi!
Within the campground, you will find bath houses and laundry facilities and a well-stocked camp store, an Activity Center with ping-pong tables, a kitchen, and more. There is a fishing pond, bocce ball court, giant chess and checkers, ladder golf, horseshoes, corn hole, and bike rentals. Or, visitors can take a shuttle to Folly Beach or downtown Charleston to avoid driving in traffic.
It is only a bike ride or a long stroll away to access all the activities offered at the James Island County Park: a several-stories-tall climbing wall, challenge course and adventure area including bouldering and slacklines, a bike path and nature trails, kayak, paddle sports, and boat rentals, a splash park and spray ground, a world-class playground, picnic areas, disc golf, a huge dog park with beach and lake access and doggy baths, as well as special events held throughout the year.
Oak Plantation Campground
This picturesque campground is only 20-25 minutes from downtown Charleston. It has over 200 RV sites that are landscaped for quiet, privacy and shade. There is free Wi-Fi and Cable, clean modern showers and restrooms, an outdoor pool, play area, picnic shelter, a laundry room, and RV storage. Leashed pets are welcome and there is a fenced-in dog run, freshwater fishing lake, as well as a convenience store.
Charleston KOA Holiday – Mount Pleasant
This highly-rated campground is situated on the grounds of a privately owned, 377-acre antebellum plantation about 20 minutes from downtown Charleston. It has 110 full-service RV sites and 4 rustic tent sites without water or electricity nestled among beautiful live oaks with Spanish moss throughout the campground. If you don't have an RV but want to experience camping, you can stay in one of the rustic camping cabins, deluxe cabins or the family lodge.
A free wagon tour of the Oakland Plantation is available for campers. You can hike a 1.5-mile nature trail, rent a bike or boat, play disc golf, cornhole, and fish the private 30-acre catch-and-release lake. There is a playground, a mini-golf course, a swimming pool, and kayaking and bike rentals are available.
Amenities include laundry facilities on site, open 24/7, Wi-Fi, Cable TV, propane, a camp kitchen, firewood, and KampK9 for dogs. The Charleston Fun Park is 0.2 miles away and the Towne Centre Shopping Mall is only 0.5 miles away. The campground is also close to the Island of Palms.
Buck Hall Recreation Area
This popular campground is situated on the site of the old Buck Hall plantation just six miles southeast of McClellanville and 35-45 minutes north of downtown Charleston. It’s a lovely setting off the beaten track with a half mile of trees between you and the highway. The beautiful views of the intracoastal waterway and surrounding salt marsh are accompanied by welcome breezes from the ocean.
The campground provides access to boating and ocean sailing and offers activities including biking, birding, fishing, and shrimping. The camp sites are paved and level with water and electric for 14 RVs and 5 tent sites with no close neighbors. There are no nearby stores for supplies, so you must purchase firewood and groceries before you get there. Campsites include Wi-Fi, a dump station, showers, toilets, drinking water, and grills. Pets are allowed. Stays are limited to 14 days.
Lake Aire RV Park and Campground
Lake Aire RV Park has 92 large, level RV sites, 66 with water/electric/sewer and 26 with water and electric sites, plus 18 spacious, secluded tent sites. This Park can be an excellent base camp for one-day trips to local plantations, Ft. Sumpter, historic Charleston or Folly Beach.
The Campground is located 15-20 minutes from downtown Charleston on 35 acres of land with a quiet, peaceful, serene Charleston charm. Campers can enjoy fishing in the large, stocked, catch-and-release private lake, swimming in the pool with a sunning deck, plan an event at the pavilion for groups and family. There are also 2 horseshoe pits, bocce ball, 2 cornhole boards, a playground for the kids, and picnic tables and fire rings at each site. Amenities include: 2 sanitary disposal stations, clean tiled bathrooms with hot showers, laundry facilities, propane, public-use charcoal grills, and free Wi-Fi. Firewood is for sale on site. Leashed pets are welcome.
Angels Landing Campground, Restaurant & Marina on Lake Moultrie
Angel's Landing in Pineville, SC is an hour from Charleston, ideal for campers looking for an outdoor recreational adventure and/or fun with the family. There are 130 RV sites and 15 tent sites. Campsites are large and spacious with a concrete pad/patio and electric, water and septic for 127 sites and 18 with just electric and water. There is also a boat ramp, a dog park, bathhouses, restrooms, a dump station, a laundromat, with propane and Wi-Fi available.
At this wild and beautiful setting, most campsites are on the lakefront with fishing and swimming access. You can choose from a variety of activities including cycling, hiking, fishing, tubing, boating, jet skiing, waterskiing, and hunting. There is a 3,000 square foot recreation hall with billiard and ping pong tables, horseshoes, volleyball, a big screen TV, an outdoor basketball court and a 450 ft. fishing pier. Enjoy swimming in the large resort pool with wrap-around deck, chaise lounges and tables. There are also campground events throughout the year, such as golf cart obstacle races, egg tosses, cook-off's, horseshoe tournaments, BBQ and fish frys.
The 425 miles of hiking and bicycling paths are a series of trails that make up the Palmetto Trail. The Palmetto Trail is the state’s largest bicycle and hiking pathways that extend from the mountains to the sea. Angels Landing Campground is located 100 yards from the Palmetto Trail Marker. A perfect camping location.
There is a waterfront restaurant open seven days a week, a camp store for groceries and where fishing licenses, bait, tackle, and fishing guide information is available, RV parts, supplies and repair service, a marina with gas at the dock, and secure boat and RV storage available. Boats can be left in the water behind your site.
Edisto Beach State Park Campground
Edisto Beach State Park is located about an hour from downtown Charleston consisting of 1,255 acres. There is one campground on the beach along the Edisto Island oceanfront and one deep in the shaded maritime forest. 112 camp sites have electric and water and several sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. There are also 5 rustic tent sites in an area on the marsh side in the Live Oak Campground and includes tent pads and centralized water. Tent campers may also use the sites with water and electrical hook-ups. Pets are allowed in most outdoor areas as long as they are on a leash not longer than six feet. Each campsite has a table, fire ring, and grill, as well as access to Wi-Fi near the office area and in the Wi-Fi room that has a sitting area and restroom, a camp store and gift shop, a dump station, drinking water, flush toilets, and hot showers. There is also a boat ramp and 2 picnic shelters and 2 picnic tables available on a first-come, first-served basis.
For overnight accommodations, there are seven furnished, heated, air-conditioned cabins with a screened-in porch available. They are supplied with bath and bed linens, basic cooking and eating utensils, coffee maker, microwave, and a television. They are located on the salt marsh/Scott Creek, 1 ½ miles from the ocean. Pets are not allowed in the cabins or in the cabin areas.
The park has South Carolina's longest system of handicapped accessible hiking and biking trails winding through Edisto Island's maritime forest. Visitors can walk or bike ride on the paved trails, engage in bird watching along the trails or watch waterfowl along the beach or in the marshes, swim in the ocean (at your own risk as there are no lifeguards) or access the saltwater marsh and creeks. Campers can engage in saltwater fishing and boating. The park is a nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles and home to white-tailed deer, raccoon and opossum.
Geocaching is permitted and there are several geocaches on the park; and there are also a series of short, mostly level, easy trails that wind through the maritime forest of live oak, hanging Spanish moss, and palmetto trees. While hiking, you may spot white-tailed deer, osprey, or alligators, and may even catch a glimpse of a bobcat.
There is the Bache Monument Trail which is only 0.2 miles long that leads from the Environmental Learning Center to the Bache marker. Then there is the 1.7-mile Spanish Mount Trail that leads to the earliest Native American shell mound site. The 0.7-mile Scott Creek Trail takes you through the forest with views of the marsh from three boardwalks and connects to the Spanish Mount Trail. Big Bay Trail is only 0.4 miles long taking you from the Education Center to the Spanish Mount Trail. The trail that takes you from the campground to the Scott Creek Trail is the 0.3-mile Campground Trail. The Forest Loop Trail, 0.5 miles in length, has a natural soft surface, taking visitors through the interior of the forest with views of the live oaks, hanging Spanish moss and palmetto trees. And lastly, the 0.4-mile Edisto Bike Trail runs along the paved causeway leading to the beach and to the Town of Edisto.
